Market vs Bonds
Given the weakness in the market, just not seeing much of a reaction in the bonds (10,5,2 yr). They are all a little higher but not really moving as much as one might expect from a 22 point drop in the S&P.

With the VIX low, #VXXGame premiums are also low so I continue to stay very short term. Won’t stay this way forever. I don’t want to be short a bunch of longer term $UVXY calls or $SVXY puts if we get a serious vol spike. Will continue to just make good steady short term money and wait for the opportunity to sell longer term, high premium positions. Even in this environment, it has been a nicely profitable month.

If you look at the chart for $SVXY. From about March until the election it pretty much ground higher (draw a regression line through the price action or just squint) at a steady pace. Yes there peaks and pull backs, but that’s what should happen. From the election until monday, it continued to move higher but at a much steeper angle. Add in the last 2 days, and the chart is starting to go asymptotic.

No argument that the price action is strong in the market. But if you look at the volume on the $SPY, it is anemic. Volume is dropping as $SPY grinds higher today. Just no sellers, so any buyers have to keep raising bids to get a fill.

Tagging on to what Iceman mentioned yesterday. $SPX is up actually quite nicely again today but $SVXY down $2. Given the significant contango in the VIX futures which should be driving $SVXY higher it certainly marks a divergence. If you look at a intraday chart of the $UVXY and $SPX, they are in lock step. The higher $SPX goes, the higher $UVXY goes. It seems like with the market just seemingly going straight up every day people are starting to get fearful so they are paying up for protection. That’s all I can think of.

Wow, there is just no premium out there. $SVXY Puts aren’t worth much until you get pretty close to ATM and OTM calls provide very little premium. $UVXY calls are trading for pennies. I’m guessing that is not likely to change until we get to the Dec FOMC meeting and we see how the market reacts. I don’t think a rate increase will have much affect, since it is expected, the interesting thing will be the dot plot on the future increases. That’s what freaked everyone last year.

Market made a good come back. I don’t know about you, but it just didn’t feel like any panic or capitulation. Market just slid down. $VIX didn’t really spike, just a slow grind higher until the market turned around. Way to orderly.
