Leveraged ETFs

There has been some talk here and on TastyTrade about the dangers of leveraged ETFs and how they fall harder and faster than their underlying ETFs. So I did a little research of my own based on the 2018 correction starting in October. 🙂

SPY -18.3% from 9/20 high
UPRO (3x SPY) -47%
—–
QQQ -21.3% from 10/1 high
TQQQ (3x QQQ) -55.2%
—–
IWM -26% from 8/31 high
TNA (3x IWM) -61.3%

In all cases, the leveraged ETFs have fallen less than 3x the drop of the underlying. With respect to whether leveraged ETFs keep up with the underlying on a bull run, I won’t cite them all. However, since the Jul 2010 low to the Oct 2018 high, QQQ was up 304% and TQQQ was up 3,619%. It may be true that the 3x ETFs don’t work for day trading due to one-day discrepancies but over time, the leveraged shares make a fine investment imo, especially if you have time to push thru the slogs to the next rally.

SSO TNA TQQQ UPRO

Now the proud owner of shares in all the above via short puts. Buying weekly put flies and selling calls or call credit spreads to cover cost of put fly. Using profits to buy more shares on down days. So far so good. This strat is keeping me out of trouble and allowing me to focus on family for a while.

Alas to lophirs

Although it pains me, I must step back from calling lophirs a safe trade. The max risk against potential reward is simply too high when volatility is elevated. So back to MamaCash basics for me.
Don’t risk more than 1% of account value on any single trade.
Map trades to my market mindset of long, choppy, or short. This year has really been a chop fest. Volatility tells it all.
NEVER assume that the markets can’t or won’t spike or drop to blow out your account.

I will survive but not especially proud of taking a big hit on my accounts after securing great profits for the year. I hope the rest of you are not learning the same lessons I am.:-) I will post when I finally close the trades I put on a couple weeks ago but for now, active management continues.

Pre-Earnings days are here again…

Update: This list is based on my research and backtesting. Although I use CML tools, this list did not come from CML nor has it been vetted by them. Buy at your own risk which you already do.

Each quarter, I compile a list of pre-ER candidates based on CML backtests. Attached is the Q4 2018 list. Over the next few weeks, I will continue to modify the spreadsheet to add new ideas, custom setups and confirmed earnings dates. The suggested entry date is the date on which the backtest is based. The yellow highlight means it’s currently in entry week. You can start watching earlier for a good entry or add to a position after this date. This is a starting point for taking a long position in a stock before earnings. Green highlights indicate that the candidate has 100% win rates in more than one setup.

I include only setups and backtests with 100% win rate over at least four quarters, an average return per trade of 40% or more, stocks with weekly options, and medium to high options liquidity. There are many other pre-ER candidates in CML but my preference is to stick with the 100% winners as long as they provide a diverse selection.

Some interesting observations include:

  • WYNN and SWK are the only stocks with a 100% win rate over more than 4 quarters
  • CML has introduced a new pre-ER straddle that I like. It’s in the spreadsheet under the Custom column
  • Many of our favorites have fallen off the 100% win rate list (BA, INTC, MA, PYPL and others)
  • SWK emerges as the best candidate this quarter with 100% win rate across five setups

Lophirs in top performers

Bought lophirs in top performing stocks in top performing sectors. As explained earlier, these trades do well when price moves up, flat, or down. I’m doing rinse and repeat trades on AMZN, ISRG, and SSO. This means that when a 28-35dte lophir closes for profit, I immediately replace with a new trade using the same parameters.
