Sold to open Dec 30th 93 Call @ 3.00 when $SVXY was at 90.50 on some of my remaining long stock. I was looking for $SVXY to move up to 93 before covering but the post FOMC activity led me to cover part incase $SVXY can’t make it up to 93.
Rolled a Dec 16th 80 Call out and up to Dec 30th 87 Call for even sans fees. Originally sold for 4.00 so the 4.00 debit was a wash but gained 7 points of upside.

#ContangoETFs Got too heavy in short calls on DUST, and now with the relentless plunge of Gold I cannot continue to roll at this time. I am closing a few ITM or ATM calls with losses this morning. I will have to work to build back the losses at a later date when my margin issues relax.
I’m getting hit simultaneously with positins in FB and NFLX being overdone to the downside, while my SPX spreads are being pressured to the upside. All manageable now, but until more time passes and/or tech starts its rebound, I’ll have to take my lumps on these naked DUST calls until I have the powder to re-enter.

Hello! I am looking for some advice on UVXY. I own 400 shares of UVXY – got assigned several months ago. I have been writing calls against this to reduce my loss on this. Given that volatility continues to be low, does it make sense to hold these and keep writing calls or should I dispose it, collect whatever I can and move on. I know some of you trade this instrument and would love to hear your thoughts.

I’m really surprised at how low the $VIX and $VXX instruments are given how weak the market has been acting and how bad the charts of the indexes look. Still a pretty healthy contango in the $VIX futures curve driving $UVXY lower and $SVXY grinding higher. $SPX is below yesterday’s low, yet $UVXY is well below yesterday’s high.

NUGT-a current picture of volatility drag
Volatility drag, volatility tax, slippage or whatever else we call it shows up in leveraged ETFs and becomes more apparent the longer the timeline. But the recent implosion in $NUGT is allowing us to see how this effect can play out in a shorter time window:
Using the instrument from which $NUGT is derived, $GDX, if you measure the % gain it would have to achieve to get back to its highs (from around 23.70 right now to about 31.80 on 8/11-8/12) it calculates to around 34%.
If you take 3x the 34% (=102%) that would only get $NUGT back to around 26.25, nowhere near its corresponding high from 8/11-8/12 of 35.80. For NUGT to get back to its August highs from its current level around 13, it would need to add 175%.
This is one of the reasons I’ve been aggressively selling calls at strikes near the August highs on big moves up. It will be very difficult (and will require a much bigger corresponding move in gold and the miners) for $NUGT to challenge old highs.

With $VXX nearing a new all time low and with the amount of contango in the $VIX term structure, I think $SVXY will be grinding higher for a while. Would have been better to do this right after the fed announcement. I got too focused on looking for $UVXY trades and missed that opportunity. I still think this a simple way to hit some singles.

#ContangoETFs As discovered by @john4419, NUGT will be forward splitting 5 for 1 on August 24th. That would put today’s price at 28.40. I guess they don’t like it being so expensive… probably cuts down on the volume too much. As @Ramie77 points out, it will likely reverse split again not too long after this forward split.
This will be its first ever forward split. It has reverse split 3 times, April 2013, Aug 2013, and just recently in October 2015.
