I was just talking to my wife about this. Obviously we all grew up with shopping malls being an integral part of life. But walking through them now feels eerie. Most of the stores really don’t have mass appeal anymore (how many small clothing stores can there be?) I remember a piece on The Onion from a few years back. It was a parody documentary on the Blockbuster museum. You could watch a reenactment of how people would walk into a video store and take a tape off the shelf, bring it to the cash register, and rent it, or deal with the the fact that the one they wanted was rented out, etc. Made me crack up because it just hadn’t been that long and all of a sudden we had instant everything at our fingertips. That’s the way I feel about shopping malls. People just aren’t shopping that way anymore. At least not for most of the things they need.

  Same here. Was with my daughter a few weeks ago in one of the bigger malls here in the St. Louis area that we used to go to when she was little. Hadn’t been there in awhile so we stopped in for old times sake. What a shock! Half the place completely empty and what was open was pretty much dead. Times are changing fast…

    Agree with all of you. As a Retail developer over the years here in W. Texas, it has permanently changed and we have turned away from remotely considering any new retail. So why do you think I am learning to trade. :-))

  Agree, Fuzzy..I do 90% of my shopping online in general, and most of that at amazon..For Electronics, I have a Fry’s Discount house a mile down the road..

  it is the same in the bay area, shops are closing, few people wondering in malls. One male was renovated to attract people, now it is closing again and will be changed to apartments.

  I’ll second that! I used to go but sure didn’t enjoy it. Maybe they’ll turn them into indoor driving ranges. Now I can get on board with that!

I agree that online shopping has had an impact, but also, overall people are realizing they don’t need another sweater, shirt, dress, etc…. so overall not only are habits shifting, I believe the pie is shrinking.

On the other hand, I buy nothing online. I buy local, or sometimes through a catalog.
