  The standard pre-earnings setups in CML are 3/1, 7/1, and 14/1. However, I look at custom setups too especially if there’s a pullback on a ticker that has great historical stats for earnings momentum. MSFT is a great example. There were several quarters where you could have made money entering at any point along 21 days to 3 days before the report. Full disclosure: people tell me that they lose money while I make money (you can imagine they’re not happy). I start small, add layers on pullbacks, and exit on huge up days.
  
  All I can do here is provide guidelines because this isn’t a rigid system. I happen to love it because it aligns with my trading style. One of my trading styles that is.:-) Of course, I have lost money before but overall, these are my most consistently profitable trades. So every quarter, I get in line and give my money to the bookmaker… er the market maker.:-)

I did this yesterday with MRVL… although earnings are not until late August, bought the 22 calls for .45, Aug 3rd (so I can roll up if it works). What does CML say about that one?

  I can take a look at CML if you’d like. Typically, expanding vol and surge pricing doesn’t occur that long before earnings.

  Jeff, buying 45 days before earnings doesn’t really fit the pre-ER strategy. You’re looking for the vol expansion and price surges that occur as the earnings draws near, entry not more than 21 days before – typically 3 days, 7 days, or 14 days before. I looked at a couple MRVL studies buying long calls 45 days out and the results are mixed at best. If you liked the chart or had some other reason to buy, that’s good. Here’s a MRVL 45/1 setup.

      MRVL looks fabulous on the shorter timeframes. It has 100% win rate for the last four quarters for both the 14/1 and 7/1 setups. The 30 delta calls show the best historical returns.
