#LEAPs Thanks for all the input on my question below. It was very helpful and educational. I elected to TTMAR. I sold my call @ 2630 with QQQ at 175.16, right when the market turned up. Didn’t I once say I was the master of bad timing. Lol

SPX long calls sold

#SPXcampaign I built this one up to a triple-sized position, back when we thought maybe an Upside Warning was coming. Now they’re close to expiration with less chance. Taking off 1/3 now at about breakeven.

Sold $SPX June 15th 2825/2850 call spreads for .70. Acquired in May for .743, avg price. A double position still remains.

Older study but good data….

Older study but good data. They keep showing 45 DTE is always the best performance for selling options OTM. Also managing at 50% seems to be key to consistent gains.

I like the #pietrades a lot and will continue to do them as my primary trade tactic but for those with bigger accounts may be better to sell 45 DTE and set up ladders. Can stay farther OTM, stay on the sweet spot of decay fro OTM options, less adjusting, and steady income. This alludes to the million dollar account with SPY from a few days ago.

TQQQ bear trade

Rolled my June 29, 50 puts out to July 15, 50 puts for a credit of .45 cents. I have covered 35% of the cost of the bearish hedge in January 2019. I hope to cover the rest by the end of the year. Hopium!

Definitely a risk on day,…

Definitely a risk on day, people piling into the market at all time highs. To quote Buffett, be greedy when others are fearful and fearful when others are greedy. I think we are approaching the latter.

I am sitting on my hands and letting theta work but am actually starting to look for some potential hedges that could pop in value if/when we get reversal and pull back. Not saying it would be big, but this is not going to end well for people that are just getting into the market at all time highs.

LABU

BTC June 29, 85 calls and sold July 20, 86 calls for a credit of .60 cents. I am long the 84.78 calls in 2020. If they expire in July, I will have covered 32.3% of the original cost and I am trying to cover the cost by the end of this year.

June 6 trades

BA: I’ve got two of these on, a #CoveredBackRatio and an #UnbalancedDiagonal . The CBR had a virtual call assignment today, closing the full position for a net $2964 profit on an 8×4 setup. The UB I put on right before the close yesterday and is up smartly today.

TWTR: Opened a new Unbalanced Diagonal: Aug 37 call x10 @ 5.25, sold Jun 15 40.5 call x8 @.92. I’m really loving these unbalanced diagonals, how you can really bring the long strike up closer to ATM, thus lower risk, and at the same time bring the short call down closer to ATM (collect more $$), but the ratio makes the trade work so well.

SPY added a few more #Saf-T contracts. I’m still waiting for Saf-T shares to get called so I can reset them. I decided I make more profit waiting for full profit and paying the assignment fees, vs front running the assignment myself and giving up a few cents in order to save the fees.

I expect a really slow day from here on. It’s a “theta day” where I just sit back and catch the pennies.

#LEAPs QQQ Question if anyone wants to opine. I bought 1 QQQ Jan 2020 161 Call @ 19.50. I gave up trying to sell calls against it because of the recent uptrend. I kept having to buy them back, adding to my basis which is now about where I started. I have a nice profit in the call and am wondering where to go from here. I see four options. Try to sell another call against it. Close the position and TTMAR. Roll the call up to say the 165 strike. Or do nothing. If I were to sell a call would it be better to go further out or continue the weeklies trying to whittle away the original basis. Thanks in advance for all your opinions and support.

ETF Dividends Next Week

Don’t forget about dividends next week if you are rolling any calls on ETF’s. Remember the div rule on call assignments: The div has to be more than the extrinsic value for your position to be vulnerable. IF you are assigned for the dividend, you also are PAYING the dividend to the new share holder, if you didn’t know.

Leveraged products additional info.

Read the LABU/LABD prospectus cover to cover last night. Similar math and graph as what @jeffcp66 posted yesterday. They very clearly state that if the index goes no where, the fund will lose money and they truly are for short term trading. However, unlike SVXY/XIV there is no mention that it can go to zero or be liquidated but in periods of extreme volatility it will fair worse than a non leveraged product because of the adjustments. However once the move occurs subsequent adjustments actually mute the effects a little.

For example on day 1 a 50% drop in the index would cause a 90% drop in NAV. Another 50% the next day that number would decrease to around 80%. Still a lot of pain but not as severe.

I think the way to trade these is sell premium, hedge/spread up front so risk is controlled, and any sudden moves get out quick. Don’t want to hold the ETF long term unless you have a strong directional bias.

Personally I will be adjusting these to spreads instead of naked #pietrades. That way can still collect the premiums but control worst case scenario. Don’t want another SVXY implosion in my accounts. However the spreads will be fairly wide 5-10 points so the premium collected is still excellent. For instance an 18 DTE LABU pcs at 87/82 is going for 0.6 credit with only 5k at risk. Much less cash than selling naked but also a huge reduction in risk! Perhaps a better way to trade them? 🙂

TQQQ Leap call sold

#LongLEAPs Sold $TQQQ Jan 2020 83.33 call for 6.30.

Today, as $QQQ just notched an all time closing high, you can see the TQQQ is about 5% below its highs. This is due to the compounding effects of a 3x leveraged product. The same force that drags NUGT, DUST, GUSH, DRIP, and others downward will drag on TQQQ. Because we’re in a long-term bull market, it is harder to see this force in the chart, but today’s high gives you a good snapshot when comparing to QQQ. Thus, I like selling farther out 83.33 call against my long 2020 50 calls. I just sold 1 today (against the 3 longs) and can add more at better prices or different strikes. I am ALSO still selling short term calls, so this will throw my deltas out of whack, but I’m really looking at each of the short calls separately and less at the full picture. Upside risk on a ContangoETF is not difficult to manage.

BABA

Rolled the June 8 210 calls to June 15, 212.5 calls for a .10 cent credit.

TQQQ leaps

The reason I like this ETF is that it is an index not tied to futures or anything else. It will not go out of business and since it is really technology that will drive profits. Also, the premiums are really fat and nice.

I also keep 50% of the account in cash in case of a black swan and would double up under the right conditions.

#contangoetf, #pietrade

TQQQ leaps

It seem s to me that this is a long term trade of years and I would like  to hold the long term leaps for several years and book 100 points or more. If you had bought this ETF when it came out, you could have made 28 times on your investment. The beauty of the leaps is that you have leverage and if you can sell short term calls to pay for the trade as well as get the increase in price if the price goes up, then you have a big winner.

This is where the roll out to the next year makes sense when you have earned enough premium to cover the cost of the leap. Am I making sense or smoking hopium?

Rapid fire trades (not as…

Rapid fire trades (not as fast as an algo but close). 5 accounts in 15 minutes! All expiring this week so added a week.

#pietrades rolled LABU 85 puts up to 92.5 in 3 different accounts for credits of 2, 20.5, 2.25. I expect these may be challenged if we get any pull back.

AMAT rolled 51 cc to next week for 0.30 credit. Cost basis now 52.39. 2-3 more rolls should allow me to keep the original credit.

AMAT 50.5 CC will allow to expire this Friday. Cost 49.56 so a nice winner after 3-4 weeks of rolling puts and calls true #pietrade style.

GM 37.5 CC will close Friday finally. A little loss, cost basis was 37.72 but will just be happy to have the cash to use for other trades. Staying out of this one until the premiums are much better.

Back to sitting on my hands until Friday or Monday depending on what the rest of the week does.

Collected another $3163 in premium from these trades so nice week for trading a few days early, did not expect the market to stay up, will probably pay for a few of these trades later but at least have a cash cushion now 🙂

LEAPS 2019, 2020 and beyond….TSLA roll

#LongCalls #LEAPS – Now that we’ve got the upside risk to these somewhat contained I gave some thought over the weekend (scary!) about the other risk to these that I’ve noticed concerning the downside and possible whipsaw.

Even with the LEAPS, if the stock has moved against you quite a bit they can pretty quickly start running out of juice to sell against when they get down to the last 6 or 7 months. For instance my LUV 2019 60 strike LEAP calls are already down to 1.60 with 7 months still to run. Eventually these positions reach a point where the LEAPS don’t protect the short calls very much on a big whipsaw even if selling less than a full position.

So…what’s a possible remedy to this? Here’s what I’m planning for the stocks that I don’t mind selling against for the long term. I am going to roll my current LEAP position to the next LEAP as soon as it’s available. The debit is minimal and gives a LEAP to sell against that still offers some upside protection.

Then…think of it this way. Each year you don’t have to sell enough to cover the entire cost of the LEAPS…just enough to cover the cost of the debit roll to the next year when it comes out. Everything beyond that is profit. I feel like longer term the debit roll will be covered very easily and subsequent debit rolls can be taken out of the long term profits and they won’t even be an issue. Also when these rolls are done it will allow any adjustments to be made to the LEAP strike prices if you feel it’s necessary.

Here’s what I did with TSLA this morning. Since I’m wanting to sell against it long term and I’ve already got a 2020 position on the call side I’m rolling my 2019 put side out to 2020. This evens things out and gives another year of selling for a minimal debit.

Rolled TSLA Jan 2019 300/200 BePS to Jan 2020 300/200 BePS @ 8.50 debit.

That’s a small price to pay for an additional year of selling and avoids even the slightest whiff of theta working against the position. When the 2021’s come out in a few months I’ll re-evaluate to see if a roll would help.
